Tom Brake, Lib Dem MP for Carshalton and Wallington has welcomed Patricia Hewitt's confession that Accident and Emergency Units have got to shut.

Tom Brake said, "At last she has been honest. The Government's secret agenda to close Accident and Emergency Units is now in the open and we know what we are fighting against. I am sure her astonishingly candid confession will give a further boost to our petition to keep St Helier Hospital open."

The petition which has already received over 1,500 signatures will be delivered to no 10 Downing Street early next year. It can be signed by logging onto tombrake.co.uk. Petition sheets can be obtained by contacting Tom Brake's office on 020 8255 8155.
