On Monday Tom Brake MP and Paul Burstow MP held an urgent meeting with the newly appointed Programme Manager for the Better Healthcare Closer to Home (BHCH) Project, Steven Peacock.

The purpose of the meeting was to seek assurances that health services in Sutton Borough were not going to be scaled down and to update the MPs on the review of the BHCH Project.

Both Mr Brake and Mr Burstow are backers of the original Better Healthcare Closer to Home plan for a network of local care hospitals and a critical care hospital in Sutton Borough. Their meeting with Mr Peacock follows the Save Our St Helier march on 25 November 2006 attended by around 2,500 local residents.

Mr Burstow said after their meeting that "the future of healthcare in the borough hangs on this review. What is clear is that NHS bosses have decided that the status quo is not an option. It is vital that everyone concerned for our local NHS demonstrate their support by signing the Save Our St Helier Petition.

Mr Brake also voiced his concerns "The future of St Helier Hospital hangs in the balance. I would urge local people and anyone who is concerned about their local hospital to actively offer their help in collecting petition signatures for our petition. They can do this by logging onto my website www.tombrake.co.uk or the dedicated website www.saveoursthelier.org.uk."
