Tom Brake MP visits research project to discover new breast cancer genes

Tom Brake visited the Breast Cancer Campaign to see the progress of one of the Charity’s research projects.

On Friday 19 January, Tom Brake MP joined Breast Cancer Campaign, the only charity that specialises in funding independent breast cancer research throughout the UK, on a visit to see the progress of one of the Charity's research projects being undertaken by Prof Nazneen Rahman and researcher Mr Patrick Kelly at The Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, Europe's leading cancer research centre.

The team are using cutting-edge gene screening technology to try to identify additional genes involved in breast cancer development.

Prof Nazneen Rahman says "By identifying more breast cancer susceptibility genes we could improve the identification and counselling of individuals at increased risk of developing breast cancer. In turn, this should mean more effective treatment and preventative strategies in the future."

Pamela Goldberg, Chief Executive, Breast Cancer Campaign says "Being able to identify the genes which cause breast cancer will not only help us understand how breast cancer develops but will play a pivotal role in helping those who are most at risk."

Tom Brake MP said "I have taken an interest in the work of Breast Cancer Campaign for some time and I was therefore delighted to be invited along to see the work of one of their funded scientists Prof Rahman and researcher Mr Kelly at The Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton. It was also a pleasure to meet some of the committed and enthusiastic fundraisers who help raise the funds needed for Breast Cancer Campaign to continue researching the cure for breast cancer.''
