10.31.44am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Jul 2007

On Monday 9th July, Tom Brake MP and Rafig Gurban-Zadeh, Chief Officer of Ministry of Emergency Situations, from the Republic of Azerbaijan, met Glenn Phillips and Ian Kershaw of the Safer Sutton Partnership Service in the Old Police Station in Sutton to find out how Sutton is planning for the worst.

During their meeting, Tom Brake and Mr Gurban-Zadeh heard how Sutton's emergency planners are preparing for floods, fires and bird flu. They were also briefed on the lessons the Borough learnt from their response to the 7/7 and 21/7 bombings.

Tom Brake said, "Although there can never be room for complacency, the Borough's contingency plans, developed with the emergency services, are sound and well-thought through."
