Brake Calls On Sutton to Get Up and Go

4.33.31pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 11th Oct 2007

Tom Brake MP today urged the people of Sutton to get out there and take part in a sporting activity.

Tom said, "Taking part in sport, whether for fun or competitively makes you feel young, fit and healthy. We need to do more in Sutton."

He was commenting in response to the 'Active People Survey' a survey for Sport England, undertaken by Ipsos MORI. The survey interviewed 1,000 adults in each local authority area about their sport and recreation habits.

The survey only showed that 49.60% of adults in Sutton took part in any regular sporting activity.

Following the survey, Sport England established that in Sutton only 18.76% of people take part in 30 minutes of 'moderate intensity activity' three times a week. Sutton came, nearly at the bottom of the sporting league, 296th out of 354 local authorities nationally, and 27th out of 33 in our region.
