Brake Praises Smarter Travel Sutton12.00.00am GMT Thu 1st Nov 2007 Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, was on hand on Wednesday to promote Sutton's "Smarter Travel Sutton" project. At a presentation and open day in the Holiday Inn in Sutton, the STS team were on hand to show other London boroughs how the STS scheme was working to help reduce car use and car dependency by making sure people were aware of the public transport options already available to them in the Borough and encouraging walking and cycling. At the event, Tom Brake said; "Margaret Thatcher said, 'any man who rides a bus to work after the age of 30 can count himself a failure in life'. This is a comment from a different era. We are now in the age of climate change, the biggest challenge ma has ever faced. I say that now is the time for the 30 year old man to get back on the bus!" Also speaking at the event was Sutton Council's Deputy Leader, Colin Hall who said; ""It's a credit to local residents' environmental commitment that TfL chose Lib Dem Sutton as its partner in Smarter Travel Sutton, the world's largest sustainable travel project. "Over three years, £5m is being invested to help local families and businesses find alternative ways to travel without the car. "Smarter Travel Sutton has already shown that people are getting out of their cars and walking, cycling or taking public transport more. I'm looking forward to working closely with the next borough in the project to help get London moving." ENDS
