On the day when Sutton's tenants are being bused to London to deliver a petition to Number 10 Downing Street (Wednesday 5 March), Tom Brake MP, Liberal Democrat for Carshalton and Wallington will be launching a website to back the campaign being organised by the Sutton Federation of Tenant and Resident Associations against the Government's cash grab on tenants' rents.

The website, http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/fairdeal4suttontenants, displays a petition to the Prime Minister against the £10 million in 2008/09 that is to be snatched from Sutton's rent money and given to other Councils to improve their housing. This amounts to the equivalent of £1,473 or approximately 19 weeks rent from each rented property in Sutton each year.

Commenting on the campaign, Tom Brake said, "This cash grab is unjust in every possible way. Sutton has the second highest level of non-decent homes, does not get Decent Homes funding and yet will still be losing £10 million to other Boroughs this coming year. This is a disgrace."

Tenants will be arriving at Portcullis House at 12 noon - at which time Tom Brake will be seeking to question the Prime Minister for the sixth time about this cash grab - for brief speeches from Paul Burstow MP, Cllr Colin Stears and Tom Brake shortly after 12.30 and will then walk over to number 10 to deliver the petition at 1pm.

Tenants who want to find out more about the campaign can also log onto www.sftra.org or call 020 8915 2349.
