Power cut knocks out over 1000 properties in Wallington

Tom Brake MP was one of thousands affected by a power cut in Wallington first thing this morning.

The power cut, first reported at around 8am was caused by a fault in an underground cable. UK Power Networks restored power to the first properties shortly before 9am.  Power is yet to be restored to all properties.

Tom Brake said, “I sat down to start dealing with some constituency emails shortly after 8am, only to find no power in our house at all.  A short power cut - our power was restored at 9.10am - was a slight inconvenience but the impact on more vulnerable customers and local businesses could be much more significant.

Tom Brake is contacting UK Power Networks to press them on what extra resilience they can build into their system to ensure customers can be automatically switched to working cables when a cable fault occurs and to clarify whether any customers are entitled to compensation.
