Tom Brake Calls on Government to Stand Up for Human Rights

Today Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, asked his constituentsto back the Liberal Democrat campaign to keep the Human Rights Act.

So far, more than 25,000 people have signed a petition asking the Tory government to scrap plans to abandon the Human Rights Act. David Cameron’s government has threatened to break the UK’s commitment to the European Convention on Human Rights.

Tom commented,

“The Human Rights Act has prevented government snooping, helped victims of rape and domestic violence, protected press freedom, and preserved our right to a fair trial. The Tories tried to scrap the Act in the coalition government, but the Liberal Democrats blocked them. We have to stop them again.”

“It’s easy to get involved in the campaign to safeguard our human rights. Just sign the Liberal Democrats’ petition at http://change.libdems.org.uk/human-rights-act. Together, we can stop the Tories’ plan to trample on our civil liberties and fundamental rights.”
