Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, teamed up with Tesco, the Trussell Trust and Fareshare for a food collection on 3 July at Tesco Express in Wallington.
The local collection was part of the national Neighbourhood Food Collection, which aims to provide 4 million meals to those in need throughout the summer. Volunteers at local Tesco Express shops collected food from 22 June to 4 July.
Tesco is topping up every food donation it receives by 30%.
“The summer is a particularly challenging time for low-income children who receive free school meals during the rest of the year, and food banks depend on local food collections like this one. That’s one of the reasons the Neighbourhood Food Collection is so important to me. I was glad to see so many local people generously volunteering their time this weekend, and I urge everyone else to get involved by joining a volunteer team or donating groceries to local food banks!”
