Tom Brake MP Welcomes Recent Unemployment Numbers

Local MP, Tom Brake, has given the thumbs up to recent unemployment figures for Carshalton and Wallington. The number of Jobseekers’ Allowance claimants has dropped since January 2016.

The number of JSA claimants in February was 465, which is 37 lower than in January 2016. This puts Carshalton and Wallington as the 59th lowest for claimants out of the 650 UK parliamentary constituencies. JSA numbers are also down from last January for the 18-24 age group. Only 75 young adults claimed JSA compared to 115 in 2015.

Tom said, “I am pleased to see the number of JSA claimants drop. The success is in part due to the strength of local businesses and in part due to the effective cooperation between Sutton Council and other partners locally to boost local employment.”

He added, “But there is still more work to be done. Productivity and wages have got to be improved as people still struggle to make ends meet.  We must continue to work to ensure that everyone has the ability to provide for their families.”
