Tom Brake: Work has changed, workers’ rights have not

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, and the Liberal Democrats are calling for major upgrades to workers’ rights to reflect the modern workplace.

The Lib Dems are proposing new measures to protect workers whilst maintaining the flexibility valued by 21st century businesses and employees alike. These address serious issues that have been raised around insecurity, low pay and uncertain employment rights.

Tom Brake MP said:

“The workplace is constantly changing, yet the Tory government seem content with the status quo of workers’ rights. In Coalition we banned exclusivity clauses in zero-hour contracts, but there is much more to do. The Government need to pass laws that scrap tribunal fees, strengthen worker participation in company decision-making and ensure that zero hour contract workers have a formal right to request a fixed contract.

“Failure to do these things will result in a deterioration in workers’ rights - a penalty I am not going to allow.”
