Tom welcomes new home for Jump Start counselling

Tom Brake, Carshalton and Wallington MP last week visited the new premises in Beddington for Jump Start Sutton project, a free, confidential service, offering counselling to young people aged 11-25 in the Borough of Sutton.

Tom was at Jump Start to hear from the agency director and assistant director about the work that Jump Start do in providing counselling and listening services to young people in Sutton. Jump Start aims to provide a supportive and non-judgemental service to young people who are going through difficult or transitional times in their lives.

The group also provide occasional training or support for parents and teachers in the form of workshops. Current training is focused on understanding the reasons why young people might want to self-harm and to explore coping strategies.

Jump Start also offers an Open Space Drop-In service providing somewhere safe to talk to someone about anything that is of concern. There will always be a trained adult available who can listen. And there is a programme of services available every week including sexual health and contraception services, health advice, school pastors, young carers support, careers and apprenticeship advice and regular workshops.

Speaking after his visit, Tom said:

“Services like those provided here at Jump Start are invaluable in reducing the stigma of talking about ill mental health among young people. Young people in this country often feel they have nobody to talk to or seek support from.

They are making stressful and difficult decisions about their future and they are at a transitional stage in their lives. These services provide a vital way for these young people to find the way forward, when they are feeling hopeless or lost or angry.

I am proud that young people have access to such a high level of service and I would urge any young person who is struggling to take that difficult first step and get in touch with them.”
