Trio of MPs Celebrate Friendship With Tamil Community

Tom Brake, Paul Burstow and Simon Hughes came together on Saturday evening at the recently opened Grand Hall in Sutton to celebrate the launch of the Tamil Friends of the Liberal Democrats.

The friendship initiative, which was launched in Sutton with over a hundred members of the Tamil community, will help to strengthen the relationship between the Liberal Democrats and the Tamil community in the UK, as well as helping to promote liberal values in the Tamil community and raising the profile of the Tamil community’s interests and concerns amongst the Liberal Democrats.

Following speeches announcing the launch of the Friends group, the trio of MPs and other guests were entertained by traditional dances and Tamil cuisine.

The relationship between the Tamil community and the Liberal Democrats took a significant step forward during the war in Sri Lanka which saw tens of thousands of Tamil civilians killed and led to the Tamil community in Sutton organising in support of bringing the war to an end and bringing to justice those responsible for atrocities during the conflict.

Commenting on the launch, Tom Brake said:

“I am pleased to see my party formally recognising the friendship that we have built with the Tamil community in the UK.  This is just the start of a mutually prosperous future together.

Paul Burstow added, “It's great that there is now a friendship group which ensures the dialogue with the Tamil community continues and deepens."

Speaking on behalf of the local Tamil community, Joe Louis said, ““The launch of the Tamil Friends of the Liberal Democrats is a real landmark in the relationship between the Tamil community and the Liberal Democrats.  The link between the Tamils and the Liberal Democrats is already strong.  The Friends will strengthen it further.”
