Popular local businessman Yawar Khan, owner of the Akash Tandoori in Stafford Road in Wallington and head of the 20,000 restaurant strong Asian Catering Federation (ACF), has thrown his weight behind the Remain campaign.
In a press release, the ACF stated that they fear a drop in consumer confidence would be damaging to the hospitality industry.
Mr Khan said,
“The support from larger businesses for the EU is overwhelming. But there is also strong support amongst small businesses. Restaurant businesses are badly affected by recessions. If fewer people are in work or salaries are depressed by more years of austerity, as experts believe will happen if we leave the EU, people will have less money to spend in restaurants, it is as simple as that and jobs will be lost!”
Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington said,
“Small business owners like Yawar are the backbone of Sutton’s economy, and their voices need to be heard. Seeing the ACF, which represents over 20,000 restaurant and takeaway owners, call for the UK to remain in the EU, speaks volumes about the risks associated with leaving the EU. Our prosperity is at stake, and with local jobs on the line, Yawar and other local business owners calling for us to remain in the EU have my full support.”
The EU referendum is on the 23rd of June.
