Rights, Justice & Equalities

Liberal Democrats believe that every person is entitled to the same opportunity to succeed in life. We aim to reduce inequality, fight discrimination and protect freedom. We reject the toxic rhetoric about immigrants that pretends racism is a kind of patriotism.

“I’m proud to live in one of the safest boroughs in London and I know that a strong relationship between local police and residents leads to a more cohesive, stronger and safer community. - Tom Brake

Locally I will:

Push for a higher police presence on our streets.

Work alongside the local police and Sutton Council to maintain and grow nationally recognised Sutton Safer Partnership model and keep Sutton one of the safest boroughs in London.

Defend human rights by opposing any attempt to leave the European Convention of Human Rights.

Roll back state surveillance powers by ending the indiscriminate bulk collection of communications data, bulk hacking, and the collection of Internet Connection Records.

End imprisonment for possession of illegal drugs for personal use and instead concentrate on catching and prosecuting those who manufacture, import, or deal in illegal drugs.

Provide government funding for a national rape crisis helpline.

Increase community policing by giving an additional £300 million a year to local police forces to reverse the increase in violent crime.
Maintain cross-border co-operation in combating serious organised crime by retaining the European Arrest Warrant, membership of Europol and access to EU information databases.
Replace Police and Crime Commissioners, elected at great expense in elections with very low turnout, with accountable Police Boards made up of local councillors.
Transform prisons into places of rehabilitation, recovery, learning, and work, with suitable treatment, education or work available to all prisoners.
Scrap the flawed Prevent strategy and replace it with a scheme that prioritises community engagement and supports communities in developing their own approach to tackling the dangers of violent extremism.
Ensure that the immigration system is operated fairly and efficiently, with strict control of borders, including entry and exit checks and adequately funded Border Force policing of entry by irregular routes.
