In the last 24 hours, over 1000 residents have signed a petition started by local Lib Dem MP Tom Brake calling for the Government to stop cuts to local school funding.

Sutton's schools have had their budgets cut by 6% — over £300 per pupil — since 2015. Annually, that is a funding shortfall of nearly £6.5 million.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said:

"These Tory funding cuts are damaging and disgraceful. They're creating real challenges for schools throughout Sutton, with teachers forced to cut vital programmes and even hours off the school week. Our children deserve better than this.

"My hope is that this petition will force the Government to see they are harming teachers, parents and students, to admit their failure and to give our schools the funding that they need.

"Even Sutton’s excellent schools are finding it tough to cope with this financial squeeze. I encourage residents to sign and share this petition so that together we can save our schools."

Tom is calling on senior Education Minister Damian Hinds to accept responsibility and tackle the school funding crisis without delay. The petition gives worried parents and teachers the opportunity to express their anger and oppose the catastrophic impact of these cuts.
