Robert Wolanin, third year from St. Mary’s Junior Primary School, was the overall winner in Tom’s annual competition to design a Christmas card to be sent to over 1,000 residents, local charities and businesses.

As part of his prize, Robert was given the opportunity to press the button on the annual Christmas lights switch-on ceremony in Wallington, marking the start of the festive season. The event was held on Friday evening outside the Old Town Hall, and featured Santa’s Grotto, food stalls and carolling.

Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat candidate for Carshalton & Wallington, said:

“I always look forward to the annual Christmas lights ceremony, and this year’s event was exceptional. From the incredible food to a very convincing and musical Elvis, this was a brilliant way for local families to mark the start of the Christmas season.

“As we get closer to Christmas, the festive lights in Wallington will be a reminder of the Christmas cheer that we should all take with us as we prepare for the holiday season.

“I also want to congratulate Robert on his winning design, and on being the chosen one to switch on the lights. All the entries to the competition were amazing exhibits of local pupils’ talents. I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas season!”
