Commenting following the news that Nissan will no longer build the new model X-Trail SUV at its Sunderland plant, Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said:
"The Conservatives have known from the start that Brexit would hurt the car industry, which is why they made the deal with Nissan back in 2016. Yet even this £61 million attempt to curry favour with Nissan was not enough to prevent the company from cancelling the production of a new model in the UK. This just goes to show how fearful businesses are of the future in Brexit-blighted Britain.
"No deals or promises are going to protect our businesses from the full impact of Brexit. The best option for business now is to give the final say to the people and to give them the option to stay in the EU."
