Better Buses for Sutton

We live in one of the few boroughs without a Tube station, so many residents rely on buses to get around.

I recently ran a survey asking residents how we can improve local bus services. 1,000 people took part and I've used their responses to put together 15 key demands for Transport for London:

127 route:

  • Frequency of every 10 minutes between 6am and 8pm.
  • 4 per hour, from 8pm to 11pm.
  • 3 per hour and between 11pm and 12pm.

157 route:

  • 2 services between 5am and 6am.
  • 4 services between 6am and 7am.
  • Increase frequency from every 10-14 minutes to every 10 mins from 7am to 8pm.

154 route:

  • Increase frequency from every 12 mins to every 10 mins during the day.
  • Run the route 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Keep the route going all the way to West Croydon station rather than terminating earlier.
  • Add a stop closer to East Croydon station.

407 route:

  • Maintain frequency of services.
  • Make it a double-decker service

X26 route:

  • 4 buses per hour from 6am to 9pm
  • Add a stop at Plough Lane

80 route:

  • Make it a double-decker service at all times.
  • Maintain current frequency
  • Run the route 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Extended the service to the Cancer Hub/Royal Marsden and to the Hackbridge town centre, maintaining a toilet stop for drivers.

463 route:

  • Split the bus into two routes.
  • Maintain a frequency of every 15 minutes.
  • Improve reliability especially at peak times.

151 route:

  • Run the route 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

470 route:

  • Divert the route via St Helier Hospital to Epsom Hospital and allow Freedom Passes to be used in Epsom.
  • Increase frequency from every 30 mins to every 15 mins.

93 route:

  • Improve the queuing situation in Church Hill Road, Cheam.

S3 route:

  • Maintain the route as Hail and Ride.
  • Reinstate the stops by the Royal Marsden.
  • Increase frequency from every 20 minutes, Monday to Saturday between 7am and 8pm, to every 15 mins.
  • 2 buses per hour between 6am and 7am and 3 buses per hour between 8pm and 9.30pm.
  • Maintain 4 buses between 3pm and 4pm.
  • Run the service on Sundays.

S4 route:

  • Run the service on Sundays.

Countdown facilities:

  • Add them to the stop at The Mount, Clockhouse.

Bus modernisation:

  • Upgrade the fleet to Euro 6 in the next 2 years and immediately move to electric for the most polluted routes, including Central Road in Worcester Park.
  • Make all new contract routes out of Sutton Garage electric in the next 2 years.

Sutton Garage:

  • Stagger times to improve the queuing situation at the end of the day.
