Carshalton and Wallington have chosen their new local charity.

Last month, residents of Carshalton and Wallington voted for the Riverside Animal Centre to be the chosen local charity for their MP, Tom Brake to fundraise for in 2014.

There were two other great charities in the short list. The Liam Charity  - that helps support young people through raising money and awareness of teenage suicide, and The Diamond Riding Centre - which provides therapeutic riding and carriage driving for children and adults with disabilities.

The results were close, but the Riverside Animal Centre was a well-deserved winner.  With the charity originating in a small family home, they have grown from strength to strength – now being able to help in excess of 2,000 wildlife casualties and over 500 cats and dogs every year.

The Riverside Animal Centre said, "We are delighted to have won the vote to be Tom Brake's official 'Charity of the Year', particularly over such other worthy causes.  It's inspiring to know that so many people care about the work that we do and want to actively support our continuing success, and we look forward to working with Tom and his team to build on this in the coming months.  Thanks to everyone who voted, and also to a constituent of Tom Brake's, Kath Dugard, for the initial nomination".

Over the next six months, Tom will be undertaking a range of fundraising activities, including the extremely tough WildMan trail run, to raise vital funds for this amazing charity.

Tom said, “As a cat owner myself, I am in awe of the great work the Riverside Animal Centre do with thousands of helpless animals every year. I personally know from talking to residents, how much the animal centre is respected and loved for the many animals and families they have helped in Sutton. Now, it’s time for us to help them.”

The other two charities short-listed both do amazing work in our local community and I will be doing as much as I can to support their fundraising work over the coming year as well.”

Since announcing he is supporting the Riverside Animal Centre on 26th June, Tom has already raised over £800 for the charity.
