Proud of Britain's Liberal Traditions

June 21, 2004 12:00 AM

Tom Brake was one of the speakers at Carshalton Baptist Church's community day on Sunday morning. The church is in Strawberry Lane, Carshalton.

In his brief address, Mr Brake highlighted the need to fight against the scape-goating of ethnic minorities whether they are British or asylum seekers or immigrants and to bridge the gap between the young and the older generations.

Mr Brake said, "I am proud of my country because we have a tradition of being liberal, tolerant and providing sanctuary to those fleeing repression, murder or torture. As individuals, we can do much to challenge the views of a small minority who are seeking to legitimise attacks on those who are often the most vulnerable in society."

Mr Brake urged the Church to raise funds for; refugees in Darfur, Western Sudan where the world's largest humanitarian crisis is developing and initiatives for young people in Sutton.
