Millennium Volunteers To Be Rewarded - Brake

March 22, 2006 11:46 PM

After hours of volunteer work, 79 Millennium Volunteers from Sutton will receive awards from local MP Tom Brake on Thursday, 30th March, at 7pm in the Carshalton Water Tower, West Street.

Millennium Volunteers are young people from the age of 16 to 24 who give up their free time to work in their local community.

Tom Brake, who is an unpaid Director of local charity Centre for Environmental Initiatives, said, "I really commend the commitment demonstrated by these young people. The Millennium volunteers not only contribute to their personal development, but also provide an outstanding example of active citizenship as well. And the local community benefits from improvements to services and the quality of life in general."

The Award for 100 hours of voluntary work signed by the Under Secretary of State will be presented to 37 volunteers. The 'Award of Excellence' signed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills will be handed to 42 volunteers for 200 hours of work.

In Sutton, the Centre for Environmental Initiatives manages the Millennium Volunteer project. The project is a huge success: since its start in 1999 the number of applicants is steadily rising from year to year. Employers and universities alike highly appreciate this experience. The scheme enables young people to gain valuable skills, like decision-making, communications and team working, but also practical skills like video editing or designing a website.

This year's volunteers raised money for homeless people and helped people with disabilities or old people with their daily routine. Some helped at London Wildlife Hospital or spent time broadcasting music at Youth FM. Volunteers at the Ecology Centre in Carshalton learned to cut back and prune trees prepared and cut wood ready for bat boxes and cleared and tidied the sensory garden. Most of the volunteers carry on with their work after they have achieved their 200 hours
