Brake: Authorities Need to Gear-Up for Smokefree England

April 3, 2007 2:08 PM

Today, Tom Brake MP, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington has challenged the Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust and Sutton Council to confirm they are ready for Smokefree England on the 1st July 2007.

Studies prepared by the Government's Regulatory Impact Assessment show that approximately 700,000 smokers may quit due to the impending legislation. Tom Brake MP sees this as an excellent opportunity to improve the health of English citizens, following the examples of the Welsh and Scots where anti-smoking legislation is now in place.

Reports that certain councils have been less eager to prepare for the imminent changes and that certain trusts have reduced their funding for Stop Smoking Services has made Tom Brake call for the Primary Care Trust and the Council to work together to make the process of transition easier for smokers who decide to stop smoking.

Tom Brake said, "All the relevant authorities need to gear-up for the expected spike in demand for help to stop smoking. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help smokers break the habit. We must capitalise on this opportunity."

Tom Brake has written to the Chief Executives of the PCT and Sutton Council asking them to set out how they will be responding to this challenge.
