Getting Your Eyes Tested Can Stop Sight Loss - Brake

"Get your eyes checked out!", that's the advice from Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington after he visited an Eye Health Alliance reception recently.

The reception in Westminster was organised to spread awareness about the poor state of elderly eye care in the UK. Eye Health Alliance is part of a group of optical bodies, including the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, the Association of Optometrists, the College of Optometrists and the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians.

Good eye health, including regular check-ups are essential to the detection of sight loss and disease. Research done by the Alliance found that 4 million elderly people are not getting regular eye check-ups, leading to undetected eye ailments. In addition 26% of sight loss has been linked to untreated cataracts, which, if detected, can be cured without suffering any sight loss.

Tom added, "We all need to maintain good eye health to prevent unnecessary sight loss due. So let's all get our eyes tested. That's what I will be doing in the next few weeks."
