Brown has auctioned off our Freedoms - Brake

June 13, 2008 10:17 AM

Tom Brake MP today launched the results of his latest e-group survey which asked local people for their views on the controversial parliamentary vote on extending the maximum period terrorist suspects can be held without charge to 42 days.

The survey which asked 2,500 local people for their views took place on the eve of the high profile vote in Westminster.

Less than half of all respondents to Tom's survey backed the Government's plans to allow the detention of suspects for up to 42 days calling into question whether the Prime Minister was right to push through his plans.

Mr Brake, a member of the high-profile Home Affairs Select Committee said:

"I have been listening to the debate locally and nationally and am yet to hear any concrete evidence to suggest that an extension is needed now.

"Locally 58% of respondents to my latest e-democracy survey were actively opposed to Mr Brown's authoritarian plans to impose 42 days.

"After resorting to a grotesque display of cajoling, pork-barrelling and arm-twisting, Mr Brown and his Labour colleagues have auctioned off our freedoms to the highest bidder.

"There are many other measures which I support that will help tackle terrorism such as post-charge questioning and the use of intercept evidence. These can and should be introduced and will not destroy our most fundamental rights."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
