A survey carried out by Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington has shown that only 15% of local people believe that the London 2012 Olympic Games will provide direct benefits for our area.

An additional 65% of respondents thought that although the Olympic Games were a positive for London, the impact of them would not be felt here in Carshalton and Wallington. However 20% of those questioned felt that London should not even be hosting the 2012 Games.

Commenting on the surveys results Tom Brake said. 'Despite the success of local girl Rebecca Romero at the Olympics this summer, local people remain unsure of the benefits the London games could have in our area.'

The survey was completed by members of the MP's e-democracy group, which seeks to identify local views on important topical issues that affect the country nationally and local people in Carshalton and Wallington.

As the local MP for the area and Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Olympics Tom Brake said that 'I believe that the Olympic Games can have an important and lasting legacy throughout all of London, including here in Carshalton and Wallington but the budget must be managed properly to ensure that the Games provide value for money for Londoners and local businesses must get their fair share of the contracts.'

Tom Brake is pressing local businesses to register on the website so they can access details of the billions of pounds worth of Olympics contracts they might be able to bid for.
