Local MP Tom Brake is encouraging local residents to put forward nominations for torchbearers for the upcoming Olympic Torch Relay.

The organisers of the games are looking for 8,000 people to carry the flame on its tour of the UK next year, and are keen to find people with inspirational stories. They could be someone who has benefited others through their commitment and dedication, be it in youth work or caring for the elderly, or even a person who means a lot to someone personally.

Tom said: "It is a wonderful opportunity to give people a moment of recognition for their work that they will never forget."

The Olympic flame will arrive in London from Athens on the 18th May 2012 to begin its 70-day journey across the country. Over the course of the relay, the torch will travel to within an hour of 95% of the population. It will be in the London area between the 21st and 26th July, passing through Waltham Forest, Bexley, Wandsworth, Ealing and Haringey before winding up in Westminster.

Anyone interested in nominating somebody for the relay should fill out the form on the London 2012 website and prepare a short summary of no more than 150 words about why their nominee should carry the torch. The final deadline for applications is 11.59pm on the 29th June.
