The well-known Neighbourhood Watch initiative was last week awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award for its success across the country.

Everyone has a right to feel safe where they live and Neighbourhood Watch has promoted that right by building strong, friendly, active communities where crime is less likely to happen.

Tom Brake MP said, 'Locally, Neighbourhood Watch has played a key role in addressing crime and antisocial behaviour that has made Sutton one of the safest boroughs in London'.

Studies have shown that a 79% decrease in crime was noted where there was an active Neighbourhood Watch. Chairman of Neighbourhood Watch Network Jim Maddan said, 'It is the grassroots membership who deserves this award for their enthusiasm, hard work and commitment to preventing and reducing crime'.
