Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons.

Sunday, January 27, marks the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. This year thousands of commemorative events will take place across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and recent genocides. Local residents are invited to mark this anniversary during the event taking place at 10:30am on Sunday January 27 in Sutton's Europa Gallery.

In signing the Book of Commitment, Tom paid tribute to those who perished during the Holocaust and honoured the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people about what they endured, through the Holocaust Educational Trust's Outreach programme

Tom said:

"Holocaust is one of the darkest chapters in our history. Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to honour those whose lives have been destroyed by genocide. It is a time of reflection on the lessons learnt from Holocaust, and on the importance of the fight against ignorance and hatred."

"I encourage all Carshalton and Wallington residents to mark the day and to join members of community in the fight against prejudice and intolerance."

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:

"We are proud that Tom Brake is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year. It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust - as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of hatred and bigotry."
