Same-sex Marriage Vote

February 7, 2013 10:46 AM

Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington has welcomed the result of the historic vote that brings Britain closer to giving gay couples the equal right to marry.

The House of Commons voted in favour of the Bill by 400 to 175.

Commenting on the result, Tom Brake said:

"If two people of the same sex wish to publicly express their love and commitment to each other through marriage, then they should be able to do so. Society is strengthened by celebrating the institution of marriage and the decision to extend marriage to a larger number of people in our society can only reinforce this view."

"No religious denomination will be forced to perform these kinds of ceremonies under these reforms, and the Government will implement a legal guarantee to ensure that none will be compelled to."

If the Bill becomes law, it will enable same-sex couples to marry in both civil and religious ceremonies. It will also allow existing civil partnerships to be converted into marriage. Under the law, religious institutions and individual ministers would be able to opt out of performing same-sex marriage ceremonies.

The vote was aptly scheduled to take place in February, which sees the annual observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and a celebration of the history of the gay rights in the UK.
