JSA claimants fall for sixth consecutive month

September 26, 2013 6:21 PM

Carshalton and Wallington has seen a sixth consecutive monthly decrease in the number of people claiming job seekers' allowance (JSA).

Local unemployment was at its lowest in over three years, in August 2013. Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has welcomed the news as "a solid sign that we are fighting our way out of the recession", whilst recognising that there is no room for complacency.

Figures released on Wednesday 11 September 2013 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that JSA claimants dropped from 2,096 in February 2013 to 1,683 in August 2013.

At 3.3 per cent of the working population in receipt of JSA, Carshalton and Wallington's rate falls below the regional London rate of 4.6 per cent and the UK-wide rate of 4.4 per cent.

Local youth unemployment saw a slight increase from 340 in July 2013 to 345 in August 2013. However, at 4.4 per cent of 18-25 year olds in Carshalton and Wallington receiving JSA in August 2013, the youth unemployment rate is still lower than the London rate of 5.5 per cent and the UK-wide rate of 6.0 per cent.

Tom Brake added: "The fact that we have consistently low unemployment rates, compared to regional and national figures, is extremely encouraging, but there is no room for complacency."

"We need to ensure that this positive trend of recent months continues. There is much more to do, but we are heading in the right direction."

"We need to focus on youth unemployment. This is why, together with my Liberal Democrat colleagues in Sutton Council, we are working to increase the number of apprentices and young people in employment and training in Sutton."
