EU foreign nationals seeking settled status to guarantee their rights in the UK post-Brexit have been driven to anxiety and despair after months of Home Office technical errors left them unable to secure their long-term rights to healthcare, education and welfare. Then, as the cherry on the cake, the Home Office leaked their personal emails.
Earlier this month, the Home Office accidentally revealed 240 email addresses after contacting applicants who were struggling to apply to keep their residence rights in the UK. Inadequate government systems are making EU citizens fear for their futures and security of their data and privacy.
Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said:
"Thanks to the Government’s Brexit mess, EU nationals fear for their future in the UK and have not only been forced to spend time and money attempting to apply for settled status, but have now been made to deal with Home Office systems that are compromising their privacy.
"EU nationals should not be treated as second class citizens and there is only one way out of Brexit chaos - a People’s Vote with the option to remain in the EU. That way we can ensure that every EU citizen is guaranteed their right to stay in the UK and UK citizens’ rights in the EU are safe too."
