After pressure from Liberal Democrat Peers and MPs, the Government has announced major concessions on the Tenant Fees Bill.
The changes pushed by the Lib Dems would significantly limit the fees that could be charged by landlords and letting agents, require a greater degree of transparency when deciding not to refund a holding deposit, and limit the maximum security deposit to five weeks rent.
This development follows years of pressure from the Lib Dems for fairer renting practices and more rights for tenants.
Carshalton & Wallington MP Tom Brake said:
"The Government has finally shown a willingness to help the renters in our country avoid exploitation from unjust tenant fees by listening to the voices of Lib Dem Peers and MPs.
"Although these concessions have shown undeniable progress, there is still much more that needs to be done to ensure tenants receive unquestionable rights to protect them from predatory renting practices."
