Responding to the news that the NHS deficit is double the expected amount, Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake, said:
"Unfortunately, these statistics are a surprise to no one. The NHS has long been struggling due to unprecedented demand on its services.
"There must be awareness of the UK’s changing demographics. Attitudes towards the long-term care of our growing ageing population must be re-evaluated.
"The Tories must heed the warnings of countless experts and offer a significant increase in funding.
"The situation in our NHS is so severe that the Lib Dems are prepared to raise income tax by a penny in the pound to generate vital extra revenue for NHS and social care services."
