Local jobless rate hits a three-year low

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington has welcomed the news that local unemployment has fallen to its lowest levels in three years.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on 22 January 2014 show that the number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) in Carshalton and Wallington has fallen for the tenth consecutive month. The data also reveals an 18.6 per cent decline in the number of long-term unemployed locally.

MP pushes for action on unreliable trains

Local MP, and a campaigner for better local transport, Tom Brake put Southern on the spot recently about the sharp rise in travel disruption which has affected thousands of commuters in the Sutton area.

Tom met with the local train service provider Southern to raise concerns about the deterioration in their service and pass on many of the complaints that were sent to him by commuters.

MP dons his running shoes for charity…again

Local MP Tom Brake has once more swapped the busy corridors of Westminster for a running path, when he took part in the Running.jpgBeddington Park 10k Charity Fun Run on Sunday, 24 November.

Tom was joined for the run by groups of volunteers. The formidable 'Team Brake' went head-to-head with the other contenders, to raise money for Cricket for Change (C4C), a Wallington-based charity which uses sport to change the lives of disadvantaged and disabled kids.

The Roast & Ground café in Carshalton High Street, has beaten off rivals and has been crowned the 'Best Overall Independent Business in Carshalton and Wallington'. Rhubarb and Bramley in Carshalton High Street won the 'Best Shop Front' while Maxime Wools in Carshalton Beeches scooped the award for the 'Best Customer Service'.

Sutton MPs ballot doctors on St Helier

Tom Brake and Paul Burstow are contacting all Sutton's GPs to encourage them to take part in a secret ballot on proposals to downgrade St Helier Hospital.

Sutton's Liberal Democrat MPs are asking the GPs whether they favour plans to remove A&E and maternity services from St Helier or whether they support a separate process run by Sutton's Clinical Commissioning Group to decide the future of the hospital.
