Tom Brake meets with Wallington United Reformed Church for Tour of Parliament

This week, local Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake, met with Reverend Tim Clarke and seven members of Wallington United Reformed Church congregation after their tour of the historic Houses of Parliament.

The group from Wallington URC, situated in the heart of Sutton, explored the iconic Palace of Westminster. With Parliament currently in recess period, tours are allowed access onto the floors of both the Houses of Commons and Lords.

Tom Brake expressed his pleasure at the visit, saying:

‘It was great to have the opportunity to meet with Wallington URC on a very enjoyable afternoon in Parliament. I always enjoy meeting with constituents after their tours and responding to a range of questions from the importance of improving mental health treatment to the risks associated with the early detection of genetic diseases.’

Wallington URC member, Christopher Jackson, commented:

“It was certainly a very interesting and informative visit, and we are all very grateful to Tom for arranging it. Although I have been to the Palace of Westminster and Portcullis House for meetings and receptions on various occasions, this visit enabled us to see a lot of places that I had not been to before, and some of our group had never had the opportunity to visit Parliament before.

I think the thing that struck me most during our discussions with Tom was how much an MP needs to keep abreast of so many different topics, in order to address the concerns of their constituents. Even within a small group of eight people, the questions ranged very widely from pesticides and bees through the current refugee crisis and local train services to a host of questions about the health service, such as eugenics, mental health and 24/7 staffing. I was really impressed by the level of detail with which Tom was able to discuss each issue, and the way in which he seemed to genuinely appreciate people’s concerns.”

Members' tours are available through a Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of the House of Lords to all UK residents free of charge during the week. The tours are led by trained guides.
